FUN. FULFILLING. QUALITY CARE.
Dog Montessori School
Patrick's Pet Care offers a totally new way to do day care, focusing on your dog's unique physical, mental, and emotional needs.
About Dog Montessori School
Every pet owner wants the best for their furry friend. At many dog day cares, this means simply keeping pets safe during the work day. But what if dog day care could provide more than just the basics? That’s the question that sparked our Dog Montessori School.
Along with a safe and hygienic environment, our Dog Montessori School provides structured enrichment activities that will engage your dog mentally, emotionally, and physically throughout the day—all led by our force-free, fear-free certified staff.
The first program of its kind in DC, Dog Montessori School offers carefully researched, intentionally chosen, individualized enrichment for dogs. Our program calls upon the latest research from the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and the Duke University Canine Cognition Lab. It is a holistic dog day school that nurtures your pet’s entire being. This unique blend of elements has the power to transform a dog’s quality of life in day care and your lifestyle with your pet.
Patrick's Pet Care offers amenities that give your dog the ideal home-away-from-home experience. Our Columbia Heights location is the only dog day care in the city that caters exclusively to small dogs (under 25 lbs). Our Brookland location has distinct play areas for small, medium, and large-sized dogs (8-85 lbs).

Meet Our Teachers
At Patrick’s Pet Care, we believe in hiring from the communities where we serve and in investing in our people. In addition to paying everyone a DC living wage, one way we do this is by providing professional development opportunities for staff to develop knowledge and skills that can advance their careers and allow us to provide the latest science-based, fear-free, force-free service to the animals in our care.

INTENTIONAL LEARNING PODS
Rather than being expected to just "make friends," dogs joining the program are individually assessed and placed into specific learning pods based on their individual play styles and size. Wrestlers are placed with wrestlers and soft touchers are placed with fellow soft touchers. The soft touchers really appreciate this!
Like people, dogs have individual preferences, interests, learning styles, and needs. The exact type of enrichment and training your dog receives will be based on his or her needs and play style. Examples of enrichment include:
- • Puzzles and obstacle courses
- • Tricks and challenges that contribute to overall training goals
- • Confidence building exercises that translate to your daily life
- • Teaching patience and impulse control, which also translates to your daily life
- • Twice yearly dog talent shows, complimentary with enrollment
- • Activities that interest your dog

WHAT OUR MONTESSORI PARENTS SAY:
Patrick’s Pet Care has really helped 8-year-old Eugene come out of his shell.
Patrick’s Pet Care has really helped 8-year-old Eugene come out of his shell. He came to us extremely anxious and jumpy. Since August 2021, through Daycare 101, the Dog Montessori School, and one-on-one trainings with Joe (who is amazing!), Eugene has gained his confidence to more happily interact with us, other people, and other dogs. We have been really impressed with the care that the whole Patrick’s team has taken with helping Eugene grow — I truly don’t know what we would do without Patrick’s.
Patrick’s is a leader in the DC community.
Patrick’s is a leader in the DC community. I’ve been to the gamut of conventional doggie daycare places and they are the best. The truly individual attention my pup receives gives me peace of mind while at work. The personalized video report cards and photos at daycare also give me a chance to see just how joyous his day was. You can really tell that dog development is their passion. It comes through in the quality of service and great care they take with your dog family. So happy to have found them!
We LOVE them so much
Our 1 year old pup has been going to Patrick’s about 6 months now and we LOVE them so much. He is a regular at their Montessori School and also has done individual training and grooming service. Every single staff at Patrick is so wonderful, caring, kind, knowledgeable and genuinely LOVES what they do – our pup is always so excited to see them. We love the fact that they really pay attention to your dog’s types/personalities and customize their approaches instead of forcing “this is the way” type of training. They encourage and celebrate positive behaviors and never punish “bad” ones. We love and appreciate their daily reports (much more personalized and detailed than the school reports we receive for our human child). We know our pup is in a great care and are so happy to have PPC in our neighborhood. Highly recommend!!
The team at Patrick’s is patient and dedicated – and it shows
We do a lot of enrichment and training at home and I LOVE that Patrick’s does all those things at daycare, too. Too many daycares in the city let the dogs entertain themselves for hours on end and in my opinion – it can be detrimental to their training and mental wellbeing. The staff at Patrick’s incorporates fun games and training for the dogs throughout the day and it’s so great to see it in action. I also appreciate that they allow some group play, 1-on-1 time, and downtime in the crates/condos. It’s really important to us that our pup has time to decompress while maintaining his crate training, so this is an excellent fit for him.
The team at Patrick’s is patient and dedicated – and it shows. Their report cards/assessments are a tribute to that. I’m eager to bring Rocky back so he can build his confidence and try new things.
Cookie comes back happy and most importantly, relaxed.
Our Cookie loves going to Patrick’s Montessori daycare! She thrives from the personal attention, especially from Emma. We can tell how much Emma and her team care about our pup. Cookie comes back happy and most importantly, relaxed. And we like the thorough report cards and awesome photos (have no idea how they capture the right moments). Overall Cookie is thrilled every time she goes to Patrick’s and we’re happy to support a thoughtful locally owned business.
He has learned so much while having fun
This is the absolutely best place. My dog loves it. He has learned so much while having fun with his canine friends. They always greet him by name when he comes.
Patrick’s has been so welcoming to my Oliver
Patrick’s has been so welcoming to my Oliver and really provided him the attention and mental/physical exercise throughout the day that he needs. In past daycares, he is usually uncomfortable, sits in a corner, and does not interact with other dogs or staff. At Patrick’s, I saw how happy he was to be engaging with the right dogs and feeling so loved by the staff. They posted videos and photos on IG during his evaluation and he was having the time of his life. They also make me feel comfortable by providing a detailed report card including a video of his day and are available to answer any questions.
If I could give Patrick’s 6 stars I would
Meet the Founder
Patrick founded Patrick's Pet Care in March 2012 as a dog walking company in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, DC. His values for operating a pet care business are based on a genuine love of animals, a commitment to do the right thing, and a personal approach to meeting the needs of all the animals and people who depend on Patrick's Pet Care.
His journey to start a Montessori school for dogs began in Luang Prabang, Laos in 2018 when he visited Mandalo Elephant Conservation and met with the project director, Prasop Tipprasert. Prasorp explained that the elephants at the non-riding conservation are asked (not told) what to do, and are rewarded (with bananas) for doing what they were asked. The entire operation was based on choice, consent, and education. Most importantly, it placed the well-being of the elephants first. Patrick’s experience at Mandalo reminded him of growing up in New England, where choice based Montessori programs provided an alternative (and ridiculed at the time) option for educating children. He wondered if the two could be combined with his love of dogs, and the model for Patrick’s Montessori School for Dogs was born.
Fundamentally, Patrick aims to create thriving relationships between people and their canine companions, using science and consent based methods without fear, pain or force. Patrick is a certified force-free dog trainer, certified fear-free dog groomer, and a Certified Professional Animal Care Operator (CPACO).
