Benefits of Pool Time

Swimming is widely regarded as one of the best full-body workouts out there, but did you know some time spent in the pool can benefit your dog as well? From physical exercise to plain old entertainment, here are the reasons you should consider taking your dog for a dip!

#1: Full Body Workout

Just like humans, the benefits of swimming for exercise can be far-reaching for dogs. Swimming is an aerobic activity, which means it builds strength in your heart and lungs, as well as your arms, legs, and core.

Pounding the pavement can be tough on your joints, especially on your dog’s! Because swimming is a low-impact, non-weight-bearing activity, it enables your dog to physically exert herself with very little stress on her joints. This is especially important when it comes to rebuilding joint strength post-op and in old age. Additionally, according to canine physiologists, 1 minute of swimming is equivalent to about 4 minutes of running on land. Is there anything better than getting a full-body workout in a fraction of the time? We sure don’t think so!

#2: Stimulating Activity

Another thing humans and dogs have in common is our craving for mental stimulation. Pool-time is not just good for the body, it also has great mental benefits. Whether it’s a form of stress relief or fun afternoon activity, swimming is an awesome opportunity to introduce a new stimulus to your dog. In a pool, they have access to a range of activities that aren’t possible on land—bobbing for toys, submerging their bodies below water, and splashing are just a few examples. By engaging in these activities, dogs and humans alike benefit from stimulation of the nervous system, as well as further development of the senses.

#3: Confidence Boosting

A benefit of swimming that is easily overlooked is the freedom it gives your dog. Walking your dog on a leash is important, but it can also be constraining when they’re full of pent-up energy. The open waters of a pool enable your dog to explore on their own and can be great for confidence-building and learning independence.

Finding access to a pool that allows dogs can be tough. At Patrick’s Pet Care, our furry friends love our puppy pool.
